Time to Talk: Wedding is Turning into a Family Affair

July 1, 2015

Q: I’m getting married next year and I’m having a hard time with how much input and control my future in-laws are having. We haven’t really started the planning, but they’re already trying to dictate the guest list, type of ceremony and who should be in our wedding party. I think I might turn into a “bridezilla” if this continues. And I’m more irritated at my fiancé for letting them think they can have a say. Is this normal? Who should I address this with—fiancé or future in-laws?

A: It may be hard to think of this as a good thing now, but if you and your fiancé can resolve this issue with the in-laws and how to handle them now, you will be ahead of the game...

Time to Talk: Don't fall in the Parent Trap

May 20, 2015

Q: The relationship between my teenage son and his dad is quickly deteriorating. My husband feels constantly disrespected and is morphing into a bigger disciplinarian. My son is pushing back. My husband expects me to be on his side. My son wants me to be on his. I’m trapped in the middle. What can I do?

A: First off, remember that parenting teens requires a significant investment of time and hard work, and parents of teens will commonly find themselves in this situation. It is very, very common.

WellBeing Resource Interview - The Place Within Counseling Folsom

January 27, 2015

Q: Hi Suzy ~ Thanks for doing this interview! What do you offer in the community?

A: As a private practitioner, I see primarily couples and help couples develop healthy relationships. I am also the Director of The Place Within in Folsom, a non profit counseling center that offers affordable counseling services to those who qualify. We have a talented team of Marriage and Family Therapist Interns and Trainees who see men, women, children, couples, and families.

I found that in my private practice, while some folks can afford to pay a full fee for a Licensed Therapist, not everyone can afford this and many people have found wonderful, caring and supportive counseling from an Intern or Trainee.

Style Interview - The Place Within Counseling Center

December 31, 2014

Q: Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

A: The Place Within is a non-profit counseling agency that provides affordable counseling by marriage and family therapist interns who are master’s-level therapists working toward licensure. We believe counseling should be accessible to everyone. The Place Within has an office in Roseville, and I realized that there was a need in Folsom as well.
